Music is a notable feature in The Sims , as well as its expansion packs. Music is available in build and buy modes , while viewing the neighborhood or while in Create a Sim , and in Live mode over a Stereo , over wall-mounted music speakers on community lots or through instruments played by Sims. Most of the music for The Sims and expansions was not produced by "notable" musicians, as opposed to much of the music in The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 , especially Live mode music, which is often Simlish -converted versions of real-life commercially produced music.

In a home studio in a garage in a suburb east of San Francisco, some time in , Jerry Martin set about making the most inconspicuous music that he could. As the Audio Director at the video game developer Maxis, he'd already soundtracked detail-oriented simulation games like SimCity and SimCopter. But The Sims, the latest project handed down to him by the visionary game director Will Wright, would be different. The game would include all the endlessness of city-building, but none of the grandeur; it would demand the same patience as a life spent hovering over a city in a helicopter, but little of the action.

Much of their music together is characterised by long, improvised piano arcs and the sort of freeform mood jazz typical to the Bay Area, where Maxis was located: non-distracting, wallflower instrumental tracks made for sunny city-dwellers on long car rides — the sort of music that can afford to meander its way down scales, and back up again. As The Sims grew to become one of the most successful gaming franchises in history, its soundtrack became more glitzy and A-list, too. Or, to put it in Simlish, poof es eight tracks depwa should grouw to now. Life points, increasing. It starts with plucking violin strings that potter their way up and down the scale, before giving way to a call-and-response refrain not too dissimilar to the classic tunes typical of Japanese video games in the 90s.
Developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts as a sort of spin-off from the SimCity games , The Sims has become synonymous with casual gaming. Everyone knows this series. I recently got my hands on the latest expansion, Realm of Magic for The Sims 4, and I have barely been able to step away from it. They strive to bring together geniuses like composers like Jerry Martin and Mark Mothersbaugh, along with superstars of music like Katy Perry and Kimbra, all to bring the game to life. The soundtrack for this PC classic is unique in comparison with the rest of the franchise for a couple of reasons. It was more experimental, somewhat jazzy, and it probably had the best songs overall if you ask the community at large. To meet new people and walk into their little pieces of the world.
